One of the Rasmussen Family traditions is to hold a survivor competition whenever we all get together. THis year my sister and brother-in-law planned a very fun survivor Texas competition for us. The teams were the mustangs vs. the longhorns. Brian and I were on the mustang team. The challenges consisted of...
1) Texas dinner - each person had a plate of SPAM, baked beans, peas, mash potatoes and gravy and a biscuit. The first team to have all their members finish the meal one. Merill downed his meal fastest, but the Mustangs won.
2) Memory Match - hidden under bags in the front yard were different texas items like a flag. One team member had to walk out at a time and try to make a match. Mustangs won again.
3) Relay - this adventure took us over to the local park where two member had to piggy back (pony express) and pick up bags with wooden blocks. These were then passed along to two more members who did monkey bars (they are a lot easier when you're 10!), and lastly the blocks with letters were passed of to two member who had to form them into the correct word...blue bonnet, the state flower. To our dismay, the longhorns won this challenge.
4) Football - this sport is a very important part of texas life. For the challenge we had to throw footballs through a hula hoop at various distances. Once you made the first distance which was one point you could choose to move back to further distances. The longhorns won this and it was all tied up.
5) Texas Rangers - for this challenge we were told a story about the history of the texas rangers. We then were all chained together and sent out to find the keys that opened our chains by answering questions from the story. The mustangs pulled off a close win in this challenge.
6) Blindfolds - Members of each team were sent out blindfolded to collect puzzle peices. Once all the pieces were collected, the puzzle had to be put together. Longhorns won.
7) Texas History - For this challenge, we were tested on our knowledge of Texas. We had to know everything from the state motto to which presidents were born in Texas. The catch was for the last question, we could bet the points we had earned, just like in jeopardy. We bet conservatively and were able to win even though we were behind. Yeah...go mustangs.
8)Slingshots - we had to slingshot rocks through tissue paper held up in embrodery rings. There were various size rings worth different numbers of points. Mustangs failed miserably at this challenge. I didn't hit a single ring. The bright spot though was my Mom, on the other team, got quite a few points for her team.
9) The endurance squat - We were tied at this point in the game, so it all came down to this last challenge. You had to squat with your feet inside a circle, heels off the ground, and arms not touching your body. When you first do it, it doesn't seem too hard, but don't be fooled. After about 2 minutes your legs will start to shake. We drew numbers and had to face off against a member of the other team. I was against my pregnant sister-in-law. Would you believe that we were the last two in the game. Unfortunately, pregnancy has made me less stubborn and I finally had to give in...giving the win to the longhorns.
No names on the family survivor plaque this year for the mustangs...oh well, there's always next time!
